Home Vegetable Gardens
Given the lack of water, vegetables are a pricy commodity in Maciene. In fact, most households that do not have access to land in the wetlands, seldom have other greenies than that they can produce seasonally in their lands during the wet season (pumpkins) or that spontaneously grow. NGUNI is promoting improved production technics and seeds to those who have land, so to increment their productivity and teaching how to grow nutritious vegetables in plastic bags and other containers. To water their vegetables, NGUNI advises the use of water used to wash foodstuff. This is a new initiative (2021) and only 06 households have accepted this challenge.
Vegetable Production
Some families that have access to the wetlands have been receiving technical assistance, manure and seeds from NGUNI with the aim to increase their productivity so some surplus exist for income generation. Right now, of the 15 producers, 3 have reached a level of sustainability and do earn income from this practice, besides what they need to eat. NGUNI has been working with these families since 2019. 2020 was a “no year” due to COVID 19.in 2021 these households are picking back their production and NGUNI is helping to build back their capital by providing what they need to grow this seasons vegetables.
