Promoting dignity and resilience for individuals, families, and communities

Who We Are

Founded in 2010, NGUNI is a Mozambican civil society organization committed to strengthening dignity, autonomy, and resilience at individual, family and community levels. Inspired by the African philosophy of Vumunhu (Ubuntu)—shared humanity and interdependence—NGUNI believes that sustainable development must be rooted in people’s own systems, values, and knowledge.

Through active listening, dialogue, and practical action, we work to transform local strengths into sustainable opportunities for well-being and social justice.

Where We Work

NGUNI operates primarily in southern Mozambique. Currently, in

Maciene (Gaza)
This is a small community located in the district of Chongoene, Gaza. NGUNI has, in the homestead of Mabumwine, a community center, equipped with a community kitchen, water well, milling station, demonstration fields, and agricultural facilities.

From Maciene, NGUNI aims to serve communities across the entire province of Gaza.

Matola (Maputo)
In the province of Maputo, NGUNI implements community-based HIV/AIDS response initiatives, supporting adolescent girls, young women and their families through economic empowerment, care, prevention, and social protection.

From Matola, NGUNI aims to extend its services to communities throughout the province.

What We Do

Community-led solutions for lasting impact

  • A holistic, gender-responsive HIV response that mobilizes families and communities to challenge harmful norms and support informed, healthy, and autonomous choices—especially for adolescent girls and young women.

  • Economic empowerment for vulnerable girls, women and families;

  • "Centro Paulo Mabumo para aprender a ler e escrever" providing foundational literacy and supportive learning environment for grade 1 to 6 children;

  • Integrated agriculture, livelihoods, and water access interventions that improve nutrition, enhance food security, increase household income, and reduce preventable disease.

Across all projects, NGUNI prioritizes participation, local knowledge, and practical outcomes that can be sustained beyond individual project cycles.

Where We Come From

Mabumwine, in Maciene, is the ancestral home of several NGUNI founders and a cornerstone of the organisation’s vision. Donated by the descendants of respected community members Paulo Mabumo and Flora Mevassane Macie, Mabumwine represents a legacy of service, trust and community leadership.
